The EOS 5DS R has a low pass cancellation filter for the sharpest possible image quality from the 50 megapixel sensor, and for the best representation of organic patterns as are found in landscape and nature photographs. Otherwise the EOS 5DS and 5DS R are identical.
Canon introduces 50 megapixel technology with the EOS 5DS cameras, the EOS-5DS range having the highest pixel count of any 35mm format DSLR to date (Feb 2015). The 53 megapixel sensor gives an effective pixel count of an incredible 50.6 megapixels for an amazingly detailed image that is suitable for billboard and magazine cover production. There are two crop modes, 1.3x and 1.6x and even when you crop to 1.6x you still get an incredible 16 megapixel resolution. The CMOS sensor is also very sensitive, allowing for ISO values to be set normally between 100 and 6400, expandable to 50-12,800. The super fast Dual DIGIC 6 processor also allows for a continuous shooting speed of 5 frames per second, amazing performance considering the amount of information presented by the image sensor.
The focusing system consists of 61 focusign points with 41 of these being the more sensitive cross-type points, plus there is the EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition AF (iTR) for focus tracking of both faces and colour. The metering system is a 252-zone TTL metering variant (from a 150,000 pixel RGB-TR metering sensor) with Flicker Detection, and there is a 100% field of view, and face recognition during Live View on the 3.2″ 1.04-million-dot LCD monitor. Image stability is improved by the inclusion of a Mirror Vibration Control System which uses cams to raise and lower the mirror in a controlled manner, for removing all sudden stops and resulting camera shake – as well as making for a far quieter shutter release.
Video can be recorded in Full HD at 30fps plus there is a time lapse movie feature. Viewing is accurate thanks to the 100% viewfinder with electronic overlay for easy framing plus a 3.2” (8.11cm) Clear View LCD monitor with an anti-reflective structure. Physically the EOS 5DS series uses a magnesuim alloy chassis with weatherproofing for robustness in the field.
Additional features include Electronic Levelling and Grid Display to improve framing for landscape, architectural or aerial photography. User modes incude Multiple Exposure and HDR as well as having an interval timer for time lapse photography.
The EOS 5DS series has dual card compatibility, accepting CompactFlash (UDMA 7supported) and SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-i supported) cards.
